Travel Hacks for Packing Your Jewelry

Posted by

Until recently, I've never been accused of traveling light. Quite the opposite actually. In my younger days I'd check 2 suitcases for a single weekend in Vegas with my girlfriends. But, my husband will tell you I've improved a lot over the past 5 years. In fact, when we left for a 5 night trip to Cancun a couple weeks ago he saw the pile of luggage waiting to be loaded into the car and said "That's it?" with shock and amazement. Progress :)

First off, let me defend all of us overpacking women out there. Men just don't get that we can't predict what we'll feel like wearing in 2 days, am I right? Plus, each outfit needs a specific purse, shoes and set of jewelry. Trying to pack several outfits that match a single pair of shoes & handbag is nearly impossible.

I've found that the key to looking like you packed light is to really compress the items in your bag. I roll all my clothes and shove them into a backpack until it can barely zip - then I put that in my suitcase and it leaves so much extra space for toiletries, shoes and purses.

Jewelry can be one of the most difficult things to pack. You don't want your necklaces getting all tangled up in transit. And small items like earrings can easily get lost in a large toiletry bag.

One thing I liked to do is use the thin Ziploc sandwich bags for my necklaces. I put each necklace in it's own zippie to ensure no tangling takes place. Then, I stash all the little Ziplocs in a larger Ziploc. Since everything is see-through, this makes it easy to see and grab whichever piece I'm looking for.

I store stud earrings in small pillboxes and larger dangly earrings in a larger pill box. I usually stow the pillboxes in the same Ziploc bag as my necklaces and bracelets, so everything is in one place. I always carry my jewelry on the plane because I've had valuables stolen out of checked luggage in the past.

So there you have it. Simple tricks to fit more into your bag and keep your jewelry neat and orderly while you travel. Time to start planning some Spring or Summer travel!
