Though Valentines Day is often celebrated by showering loved ones with flowers, treats and gifts, the story behind the patron saint Valentine remains shrouded in mystery and speculation. One legend contends that Valentine was a democratic Roman priest serving in a time where, under Emperor Claudius II's rule, single men were thought to make better soldiers and thus marriage was outlawed for young men. Disagreeing with this policy, Valentine defied Claudius by performing marriages for young couples in secret until Claudius discovered this revolt and ordered Valentine to death.
The legend further claims that Valentine actually authored the first "valentine" greeting himself. During his time in prison, Valentine was believed to have fallen for a young girl-- his jailer's daughter, some believe-- who often visited him throughout his imprisonment. Before his death, he allegedly wrote her a letter signed, "From your Valentine," thus creating the tradition of exchanging personalized gifts and sentiments.
Today, the special holiday in honor of St. Valentine is observed in mid-February, originally regarded as a time of new beginnings and purification in ancient Rome. What a perfect time to show the object of your affection how you feel with a gift from the heart!
