What is Science Fiction?
Science fiction is a genre of fiction based largely on writing rationally about alternative possibilities. Considered a "literature of ideas," the settings used within science fiction are often contrary to known reality-- such as the future, historical past, outer space, and time travel among others. While similar in theory to the Fantasy genre, science fiction is distinguished in the idea that imaginary elements are possible within scientific contexts, regardless of how fictionalized the elements of the story may be.In 1954, devout science fiction fanatic Forrest J Ackerman coined the term "Sci-Fi" which eventually began to distinguish lesser-quality work from serious science fiction; alternatively, the abbreviation of "SF" for the genre became the reference of choice for serious writers and readers of the science fiction community. Interestingly, the genre has been linked to roots in mythology as it is understood as a means of deciphering the world through speculation and storytelling. Examples of original works with roots in science fiction include some of the Arabian Nights tales, Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Voltaire's Micromégas and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
Today, science fiction is associated with numerous subgenres: hard SF (most attention to scientific detail), soft and social SF (based on social sciences), cyberpunk (based on dystopia and misery, such as Ridley Scott's Blade Runner), time travel, alternative histories (based on the idea that historical events could have turned out differently) and superhuman, among others. Frequently associated with Fantasy, boundaries between the two genres are often blurred as authors like J.K. Rowling (of Harry Potter fame) have earned distinctions in both writing categories. However, science fiction is distinguished as the literature of events that might someday be possible while fantasy is the literature of events that are inherently impossible.
