Fouled Anchor Meaning and History
A fouled anchor insignia, with "fouled" meaning a chain- or rope-entwined anchor, is a very prevalent symbol of naval service. This symbol has been used for over 500 years, its origins being with the British. It was used as a traditional heraldic device in ancient British coats of arms for its stylized decorative effect.A variation of the fouled anchor seal had been used by the Lord High Admiral of Scotland since about the late 1400s. During the late 1500s, the fouled anchor became the official seal of Lord High Admiral Charles Lord Howard of Effingham in Britain.
