History of the Day of Silence
The National Day of Silence was created in 1996 as part of a youth movement based on the silence faced by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in schools. A total of 150 students from the University of Virginia were involved in the first event, which later gained national attention and spread out to over 8,000 junior high and high schools, colleges and universities by 2008.On the day of observance, participants must avoid speaking all day and instead interact with peers by passing out cards explaining the importance of creating a safe school environment for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity.
