What type of fan is featured on this design?
This design is Kyle's interpretation of the hand fan which dates back to the 2nd century BC. In Chinese, the fixed fan means "to agitate the air," and some specific hand-held fans were a representation of one's social status and gender. It wasn't until the 6th century that the folding fan was invented by the Japanese. In Japan, folding fans were made by tying together strips of Japanese cypress wood and the amount of strips symbolized a person's ranking in society. During her travels to Japan, Kyle was greatly inspired by the intricacy and symbolism of the Asian fan which is a popular gift item to this day.
