Why do people call footballs pigskins?
In the Middle Ages, traditional football games (now called Medieval Football) were played with a ball made from an inflated pig's bladder and leather. Though the "pigskin" nickname has stuck throughout the years, modern footballs used in National Football League (NFL) games are constructed from premium cowhide leather. This is also the case for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) games, except the footballs are slightly smaller. In youth leagues for younger children, a rubber football is often used so that small hands can more easily grip the ball.

How did the football get its shape?
The unusual, watermelon shape of the football has evolved over the years for ultimate efficiency. Said to have gotten its original shape from the early days when pig bladders were used, modern footballs as seen in American, Australian and Canadian football and rugby are now a prolate spheroid, or long egg-shaped sphere. Especially in American and Canadian football, the ball is more pointed at the ends which makes it easier to complete a forward pass or spiral pass.
