Why do people call footballs pigskins?
In the Middle Ages, traditional football games (now called Medieval Football) were played with a ball made from an inflated pig's bladder and leather. Though the "pigskin" nickname has stuck throughout the years, modern footballs used in National Football League (NFL) games are constructed from premium cowhide leather. This is also the case for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) games, except the footballs are slightly smaller. In youth leagues for younger children, a rubber football is often used so that small hands can more easily grip the ball.
