How long do veterinarians go to school for?
To become a veterinarian, four years of undergraduate study are required followed by four years of veterinary school. Upon receiving a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, a vet student can choose to complete an internship or residency with a more experienced veterinarian or veterinary practice.

Why does the Veterinary Symbol have one snake while the Medical Caduceus symbol has two?
The Rod of Asclepius, as seen in the veterinary design with a single snake, is actually the correct symbol for healthcare professionals, health organizations and the field of medicine. Although the Medical Caduceus with two snakes and wings is commonly used by doctors, physicians and healthcare associations, it symbolizes commerce, trickery and deception which is not the best reflection for the practice of medicine. According to medical historians, the medical caduceus was originally adopted by the US Army Medical Corps in 1902 and has been used in error ever since.

What kind of veterinarians are there?
Many veterinarians specialize in small companion or domestic animals like dogs, cats and rabbits, whereas a large animal veterinarian specializes in livestock and farm animals, such as cattle, goats, pigs and horses. An exotic animal vet can work with exotic pets or zoo animals and wildlife veterinarians work to rehabilitate injured or abandoned wild animals. Some vet practitioners choose to treat specific animal species - avian vets who treat birds, equine vets who specialize in horses and swine vets who deal with pigs, among others. There are also vet specialists who focus on particular types of care for animals, like acupuncture, dentistry and reproduction.
