Why is the dove a symbol of peace?
Doves are known for being uncharacteristically trusting of humans and have played a significant role in many ancient myths. In the traditional story of Noah's Ark, for instance, Noah sends out a dove to see if the flood is over; the dove returns with an olive branch in its beak to signify peace between God and the earth. The Greek goddess Aphrodite was often depicted with doves to symbolize love and beauty while Athena's doves represented renewed life and innocence. In European tradition, it is said that evil can take any shape or form except that of the dove.
