Where did the Kokopelli image originate?
As a fertility deity, the first depiction of Kokopelli was found on pottery dating between 750-850 AD. Appearing on rock art, clay houseware and ancient jewelry, the Kokopelli figure has been worshipped since the time of Ancient Pueblo communities and is still a predominate symbol within Native American tribes. The humpbacked flute player is said to carry unborn children on his back to distribute to women. Today, he has been adopted as a symbol of Southwestern culture.
