Esq. is the abbreviation for Esquire, a title that was originally given to upper class men who belonged to a social rank above gentlemen (sons of noblemen, for example, were known as Esquires when they did not have any other title). For law practitioners in Britain, Esquire most popularly refers to barristers while solicitors are known as Gentlemen. In the United States, Esquire can refer to both men and women and usually indicates that the person is a member of a Bar association. How did the Bar exam get its name? The "Bar" refers to the barrier furniture that divides members of the court and trial spectators and can also refer to the legal profession overall. The bar is often symbolized by a railing to divide the courtroom amongst the public and court officials, such as judges, attorneys, the jury, witnesses and case parties. Once a person has passed the bar examination, he or she can then be admitted or called to the bar. What is the meaning of "Proof beyond a reasonable doubt?" Under civil (or common) law, a person is always presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a jury or judge. If a judge or juror has no doubt or unreasonable doubt regarding the defendant's guilt, the defendant should be pronounced guilty due to proof beyond reasonable doubt from the prosecutor.
