What is the Craftsman philosophy?
The Craftsman philosophy promotes good craftsmanship, natural materials and simple design. Modeled after the Gothic era, the Craftsman movement's intent was to reintroduce a simple lifestyle where handcrafted work was once again appreciated and preferred. It is believed that from this ideology the saying "quality not quantity" originates.

Where did the Craftsman era begin?
The Craftsman movement started in England in the 1840s with a goal to reach out and affect the "common people" and by the 1880s its popularity had spread to North America. Craftsman ideas were incorporated into architecture and especially in the furniture industry because of its simplistic and inspired by natural design concepts.

What are the most well known characteristics of the Craftsman style?
Opposite of the ornate and gaudy Victorian fashions and mass produced goods, the Craftsman style employed vertical and horizontal straight lines. Furniture and artwork incorporated leather, stained glass and inlays of wood and shell, unlike the over-stuffed and uncomfortable Victorian furnishings. Characteristics of the Craftsman movement have often been mistaken for Spanish or "Mission" styles.

What are the standard length of the screws included with the switch plates? I want to make sure that they will be long enough to install over my deep granite back splash.
Longer screws are often needed when mounting a switch plate on a deeper surface. The standard screw lengths of rocker and Despard switch plate openings is 1/4", the standard screw lengths of all other switch plate openings (toggle, outlet, blank, etc.) is 1/2". Take a quick look at your setup or check with the installer to confirm if the included screws will be needed. We sell extra long screws in 1" and 1.5" lengths if you will be requiring them when installing on raised surfaces.
