What inspired the Hourglass design?

Kyle responds: The hourglass symbolizes the passage of time whether it be minutes or hours or days. I preferred this more general symbol for time because of its broader meaning. On a clock or watch design, time is frozen at a specific hour, which then might evoke thoughts of what one typically is doing at that hour - driving to work, typing at a computer, walking the dog, preparing dinner, watching a favorite TV show - rather than a concept with no specific beginning or end. The image of the sand timer itself is a traditional hourglass shape, with decorative lines accentuating the figure, and symbols of individual grains of sand falling on either side as if time is passing slowly (alt. the passage of time has slowed).
