Why does the Veterinary Symbol have one snake while the Medical Caduceus symbol has two?

The Rod of Asclepius, as seen in the veterinary design with a single snake, is actually the correct symbol for healthcare professionals, health organizations and the field of medicine. Although the Medical Caduceus with two snakes and wings is commonly used by doctors, physicians and healthcare associations, it symbolizes commerce, trickery and deception which is not the best reflection for the practice of medicine. According to medical historians, the medical caduceus was originally adopted by the US Army Medical Corps in 1902 and has been used in error ever since.

How long do veterinarians go to school for?

To become a veterinarian, four years of undergraduate study are required followed by four years of veterinary school. Upon receiving a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, a veterinary student can choose to complete an internship or residency with a more experienced veterinarian or veterinary practice.

Can veterinarians treat humans?

Not legally in the U.S. Although veterinarians are educated in the health and well-being of both animals and humans, they are only licensed to treat and prescribe medicines for pets, livestock and wildlife. Veterinarians do, however, perform important research in areas that are related to the well-being of humans, such as medical science, food safety, public health and environmental protection.
