What is the history behind the college Heisman trophy award?
The Heisman Memorial Trophy Award is given annually to the most outstanding college football player in the nation. Constructed of cast bronze, the first trophy was given in 1935 by the Downtown Athletic Club (DAC) in Manhattan, New York and was known simply as the DAC Award. Upon the death of John Heisman, athletics director for the DAC in 1936, the award was renamed the Heisman Trophy in his honor. Originally, each recipient of the Heisman was awarded one trophy; in 1966 however, Steve Spurrier (Florida Gators quarterback) gave his award to the University of Florida to share with his fellow students and faculty. As a result, every Heisman Award winner has since received two trophies - one to keep and a replica to give to the school. To date, most winners of the Heisman trophy have been college seniors and have played either running back or quarterback positions.

Why do people call footballs pigskins?
In the Middle Ages, traditional football games (now called Medieval Football) were played with a ball made from an inflated pig's bladder and leather. Though the "pigskin" nickname has stuck throughout the years, modern footballs used in National Football League (NFL) games are constructed from premium cowhide leather. This is also the case for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) games, except the footballs are slightly smaller. In youth leagues for younger children, a rubber football is often used so that small hands can more easily grip the ball.
