Question Mark Definition, History and Uses
A question mark is a punctuation symbol that is also known as an interrogation point, question point, query, or eroteme. While it typically marks the end of an interrogative sentence, it may also be used within a sentence as one would use a comma. The symbol may have originated from the Latin quaesti (that is, qvaestio), meaning "question". This term was abbreviated during the Middle Ages to Qo with the uppercase Q written above the lowercase o, and this mark was transformed into the modern symbol. The name "question mark" was coined in the late 1800's by Lee Coleman.
In Spanish, interrogation sentences begin with an inverted question mark and end with a standard one. In mathematics, "?" commonly denotes Minkowski's question mark function. In medicine, a question mark preceding a diagnosis might be used to indicate a possible diagnosis. In computing, the query mark is a wild card symbol that can be used as a substitute for any one character (as opposed to the asterisk which can be substituted for any number of characters: from zero to infinity.)
