Cinco de Mayo Facts
Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican national holiday commemorating the Mexican victory over the French army at Puebla de Los Angeles, Mexico, in 1862. General Ignacio Zaragoza lead Mexican forces to an initial victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
In the United States the holiday is a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride that puts an emphasis on traditional Mexican foods, beverages and music.
Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day, a common misconception here in the United States. Mexican Independence Day is in fact September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish) and is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.
