Ginkgo Biloba Tree Facts

The ginkgo biloba tree is one of the oldest living tree species. It is in the division (phylum) Ginkgophyta that consists of a the single order Ginkgoales, a single family Ginkgoaceae and a single extant genus Ginkgo.

The seeds of the ginkgo are called gymnosperms (meaning "naked seeds") because they are a primitive form not enclosed in a ripened fruit but rather protected by cones or a fleshy seed coat.

A Ginkgo tree can grow up to a height of 75 to 100 feet and a width of nearly 30 feet. The trunk itself can reach a diameter of about 13 feet wide or larger if in open areas, with some trees being very wide spreading, others quite narrow.

Ginkgo Biloba Uses

Ginkgo biloba leaves are among the most extensively studied medicinal herbs in use today. As a botanical, the leaves are used in the form of concentrated ginkgo biloba extract (GBE). Extremely popular in both Europe and the United States, ginkgo supplements are among the best-selling herbal medications. In France and Germany, it consistently ranks as one of the top medicines prescribed.

Traditional Ginkgo bilobas usage has been to treat circulatory disorders and enhance memory. Scientific studies seem to support to these traditional medicinal uses, indicating that GBE may be particularly effective in treating ailments associated with decreased blood flow to the brain, particularly in the elderly, by improving blood circulation. GBE seems to dilate blood vessels and reduce the stickiness of blood platelets.

Free radicals can damage important cellular molecules including DNA, lipids or other parts of the cell. Free radicals, include ultraviolet light, radiation, cigarette smoking, air pollution and other environmental toxins as well as others naturally occurring in the body. They are linked with human diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia, Alzheimers disease and Parkinsons disease.

Ginkgo leaves contain flavonoids and terpenoids, two types of chemicals believed to have potent antioxidant properties. These antioxidants can neutralize free radicals and may help prevent some of the damage they cause.
