What is the Meaning of Dragonflies?
Holding much symbolism in Asian (Japanese) and Native American (Plains region) cultures, the dragonfly is regarded as a symbol of light, adaptability, grace and transformation. Widely known for their bright and colorful wings, dragonflies can use their bodies to reflect and retract light, thus being known as "light bearers." Dragonflies also learn to bend, shift and adapt light in numerous ways with their wings which help to develop the creature's vivid wing color patterns. The dragonfly is further considered a unique creature in its extreme flight maneuverability as it can quickly change directions while flying: upward, downward, forward, back and side-to-side.Dragon flies can be considered a traditional symbol of transformation and life's neverending process of change. For one thing, these creatures spend most of their life spans at the bottom of pools and ponds as larva or "nymphs," with the larval stage lasting for up to 5 years! They eventually learn to work through the weight of their wet water habitat into the sunlight, eventually shedding their protective casing when ready and flying away from the pond to unite with other dragonflies who have completed the maturation process. From this point on, dragonflies continue to live on for five or six months; living such short lives, however, gives us a constant reminder that we should do what we can to live life to the fullest.
