GFCI Outlets, GFI Receptacles
|
GFCI Electrical Outlets, GFI Decorator Receptacles Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI or sometimes GFI) receptacles provide a higher level of safety and prevent injuries by shutting off power when device has been tripped.
- How GFCI Receptacles Work: A GFCI outlet is a device with its own built-in circuit breaker. They have small "TEST" and "RESET" buttons in the middle and often a small light indicating that power is flowing to outlet and is working properly. They are designed to protect you from an electric shock plus protect your breaker panel are wiring from being shorted out. Available in 15 amp, 20 amp, tamper-resistant, specification grade and hospital grade versions.
- Requirements: Building codes require installation of GFCI outlets in areas near water sources such as in your kitchen, laundry room, bathroom or garage. It may not be necessary to install a GFCI outlet for all your outlets near water as long as the first one in a series (closest to the electrical panel) is a ground fault protected device. The first GFCI can trip or shut off other receptacles further down the circuit if they experience a short. (Check your local building codes for requirements needed to pass inspection.)
- Safety: GFCI outlets provide an extra level of safety. Ground fault circuit interrupter devices have a built-in circuit breaker that could prevent the many electrocutions, burns, severe electric shock injuries and electrical fires that occur each year in residential homes. These devices detect ground-faults (where electricity is leaking to the ground). By stopping or interrupting the flow of electricity, these devices can lessen the severity of injuries and fires. In addition, ground fault interrupt outlet versions with tamper-resistant features require no adult action to maintain safety and are a proven safety solution that prevent painful injuries.
